Section 1:

    i.      2D Concept Art

ii.      I will be creating a series of conceptual artworks exploring and depicting an alternate future version of earth, in the context of a video game, with man-made chemical resources altering the course of evolution, mutating the flora and fauna, over many years. Genre-wise, it will primarily be survival based, with the effects of the chemical resources and time providing a unique visual approach to the traditional apocalyptic depiction of a ruined earth. The intersection between the use of natural and (scavenged) man-made resources, both now found in the environment simultaneously, will form the foundation of the crafted items and structures within the game world. Creating an interactive element at the end of the assignment, such as a semi-animated show-reel, will help to create a centre piece in my end exhibit.

Section 2:

iii.      Research into a variety of subjects is integral to this concept, with exploratory sketches and annotations in my sketchbook helping to establish the early visual language of the project. Real-world references will help ground my designs in reality, with the referencing of other artists providing an insight into techniques and processes that will help create a more efficient work-flow, as well as help with the relevant design language one must use to communicate the desired information. Creating a visually stimulating series of concepts that one can instantly understand is paramount.

Section 3:

i.               The use of both a sketchbook and digital media will ensure there is a cohesive process, with initial ideas and thumbnails being sketched out and explored in my sketchbook, of which are then moved into a digital format (Photoshop) for further exploration and refinement. My Wacom tablet will allow me to digital draw and paint my concepts, refining them to a polished and presentable level. Research and referencing will be conducted throughout the entire process as necessary, however, the bulk will be conducted and organised in the initial stages of the project. Acquiring conceptual art and design skills, techniques, and processes via books, tutorials, and observation will be critical to the success of my assignment. Techniques may include matte painting, shape language, and silhouette design, as well as other design related techniques.

Section 4:

v.      Feedback will be enquired from both self-reflection and peer review, as well as the advice from tutors. Advice may be acquired from online forums as I see fit. Awareness of the natural development of the project is important, with attention being payed to the progression of my designs in my written evaluation. Reflection regarding my time-management, efficiency of techniques and processes, as well as the overall outcome will be conducted as well.

Pitch for a Game Mechanic

Mechanic: Ability that allows a character/player to play a guitar on a staff and rap to locate and open doors to sealed off areas to gather hidden crystals in an open world game.

Info: Using a specific ability causes ethereal/magical guitar strings and knobs to appear over the equipped staff, allowing the player to play the guitar by matching displayed keys on screen with ones on their keyboard. This also causes a verse/half a verse of a rap to be sung once a correct button has been clicked.

A certain percentage of completed button presses opens part of a seal, to fully open the door you must complete progressively harder songs/parts of songs in succession, one after the other. If you fail one song, you can either leave and come back or retry that specific song. Your progress for the other parts of the seal are saved.

If you are not at a seal, completing a verse/riff by activating the ability pings your mini-map, the more you complete in quick succession the more frequent and accurate the pings are. These pings help locate sealed off areas and other special locations.

This is a reaction time based mini-game incorporated into an ability within a larger open world environment.

Once the seal has been fully unlocked, the door opens and the player is allowed to collect their reward, which may be a piece of loot, a buff or an upgrade crystal. Upgrade crystals allow players to upgrade specific stats, abilities, unlock cosmetic items and new songs/song combinations.

Reasoning: Like the other two posts regarding pitches, the inspiration for these came from a social task. The five answers agreed upon to be used were GTA V, Breaking Bad, Rapping, Medieval Fantasy and Metal, Rock + Punk.

The idea for the use of a staff came from the Medieval Fantasy answer, while the magical/ethereal guitar was inspired by both Metal, Rock + Punk and Medieval Fantasy. The rap part of the mechanic is from the Rapping topic. The crystals came from Breaking Bad and the open world element as well as the map was inspired by GTA V.

Demographic/Target Audience: The people that this mechanic is suited towards are those that have either experience with musical games/music, MMOs and adventure games as well as those who enjoy the collectible and mini-game/quicktime elements of games.

Pitch for a Pixar Style Animation

Pitch/Story line: Medieval knights/squires venture forth into a dangerous mountain range, trying to find a sacred song/verse (rap) that will heal their musical king who resides on a beach, having abandoned his usual throne in his sea-side castle because of a sudden illness.

Characters: The characters will be stylised to adhere to the ‘Pixar Style Animation’ part of the brief. A decently sized cast of characters is needed, with the king and 2-4 other main characters. Several stereotypes may be put into use, as well as an underdog. One character, who is shy, would overcome their fear of singing to an audience by completing an act of bravery. That character would then go back and heal the king. (Character is perhaps a relative of the king.)

Locations: Fantastical and stylised vistas, mountains, castles, coastlines and villages are a few possible locations (all CGI/Matte Painting). A strong use of colour and mood is important and should change according to the plot points throughout the movie.

The locations themselves would be heavily fantasy inspired with large mountains, sprawling castles and large open vistas. Each location will have a distinctive colour palette.

Info: A group of stylised 3D characters with relatable personalities that are communicated through dialogue, body types, expressions and actions embark upon a journey to find and learn an ancient song (rap) to help heal their king, who has a mysterious illness. The king is too weak to play his guitar, so he sits slumped on his throne and stares out into the distance with his guitar by his side.

A possibility exists that an antagonist would be revealed, who poisoned the king and tries to stop the group of heroes in the mountains. He/she is perhaps a relative to the king/his heir or a rival king/queen.

Elements of friendship, character development and lessons to be learnt will be woven into the story. To make sure it is child friendly, violence will be kept to a minimum and if there is some, it would be comical. The way conflicts would be resolved is through singing and teaching valuable lessons.

The journey would be akin to the journey Frodo and the fellowship takes in Lord of the Rings; travelling across a large distance and encountering challenges and obstacles along the way. Eventually the characters would accomplish something major, learn an important lesson and get the song/rap as a reward. They would then return to their ill king on his beach throne. The movie ends with either a sunset or sunrise and the group on the beach singing/rapping to their king as he heals in the glowing light. (A sunrise would most likely be used, the group would return early morning/late at night and make their way to the beach. They would sing to their king while he wakes up with the sunlight sweeping up across the beach and towards the king.)

Reasoning: Like the previous pitch, this pitch for an animation is based off of five answers received during a social task. The five answers were GTA V, Breaking Bad, Rapping, Medieval Fantasy and Metal, Punk + Rock.

The main influence for this story line is Medieval Fantasy of which inspired the setting. The elements of illness were influenced by disease, which is a major part of Breaking Bad. For the king, Metal, Punk, Rock, Rapping and Medieval Fantasy was combined to create a music-orientated king who plays the guitar. The rapping also inspired a major plot point of the story: the song the group is trying to learn to heal their ill king.

Where Grand Theft Auto V comes in is in regards to the beach location, something quite prevalent in Los Santos, the main city in GTA V.

The reason that the movie is meant to be in 3D, be child-friendly and teach valuable lessons is because of the style of animation that is supposed to be achieved. Pixar’s animation style isn’t just in regards to the visuals, it also includes the stories, the themes, the characters, their personalities and how they interact.

Demographic/Target Audience: The target audiences for this animation are teens and young adults, so 13-20 year olds. The plot is emotional enough to appeal to older viewers and the content and maturity levels are more directed towards the younger viewers. This, among many other factors, will ensure that many people of different ages will find the film to be entertaining and satisfactory.

Sunrise: Very important part in the final scene/s, creates an interesting colour palette as well as mimics the king waking up. The sun itself might be perceived as his eye, opening as well to see his kingdom again in a new light. As the sunlight stretches across the beach, the king wakes up. Once the sunlight passes his eyes, he opens them.

Mountains: They journey into the mountains while in sunlight. The light becomes darker and more ins and outs of light/shadows occur as they adventure further into the mountains.

Beach, Castle and Throne: The castle is further away from where the king’s throne would be, which is atop a sand dune, perhaps flanked by rocks and tidal pools.The beach throne itself will be made from sand, sea shells and stone/s. The water would transition from turbulent and stormy to calm and relaxed when the group returns back with the song.

The beach would be a long expanse with stylised dunes, rocks and tidal pools flowing and curving into the main castle at the end of a peninsula or outcropping of rock. (Possibly towers dotted along the beach by rocks, outcrops and cliffs.)

Extra Notes: During the final song, the king plays his guitar once he wakes up while the rest of the group join in on the song.

Pitch for a Live Action Film

Pitch/Story line: A rapper and a local Metal band are in a turf war regarding drug trade routes in a Los Santos inspired city, culminating in a rap battle with medieval fantasy lyrics, themes and language.

Characters: Rapper [an Eminem-like character] (and a rap group for the movie), band members of a Death Metal band [lead singer is an Ozzy Osbourne-like character], supporting cast and characters.

Locations: Los Santos/Los Angeles (California) type city, scenes would most likely be shot in Los Angeles or a similar city.

Main locations within the city would be: bars, the beach, several streets and miscellaneous locations throughout the city.

Reasoning/Info: The story line itself is based off of five answers received during a social task where we, the students, got to know each other better. The five answers we agreed upon as a group were GTA V (Grand Theft Auto Five), Breaking Bad, Rapping, Medieval Fantasy and Metal, Rock + Punk (music genre/s).

From GTA V we pulled action, car chases, heists/crime and Los Santos. The theme of drugs is from Breaking Bad (a TV series), as well as GTA V, the rap elements (Eminem/rapper and rap battles) were inspired by the Rapping answer.

The content of the final rap battle, as well as the communication throughout the film, is inspired by Medieval Fantasy, specifically dark and gritty RPG games such as Dark Souls as well as real life Medieval and Feudal times. The words thy and thou are included in the dialogue, which should indicate the type of language style used.

The reasoning behind the second group of main characters, the Metal band, would be the Metal, Rock and Punk answer. To contrast one genre (rapping), metal is included. This could possibly create an interesting and fresh dynamic, specifically in regards to the way, musically, the rap battles would play out. The metal band would most likely supplement their verses with guitar riffs, growls/screams and drums, while the rap group would perhaps have a beat boxer, electronic music or pre-mixed beat to back them up.

The contrast of musical styles and sounds could create an interesting audio-related experience. Not only would the audio contrast, but the visuals as well. Lighting, set-dressing and costume changes between the two groups would create an interesting back and forth to help keep the viewer engaged with the fast pace of the film.

Demographic/Target Audience: The language, visuals and story are mature and the film itself is intended for young adults (18-30). Musical styles and current trends that appeal to the targeted generation\s will be taken into account and used to the film’s advantage.

Rap: Scenes in the rap battles would include shots of single characters in high contrast to isolate them from the groups during pinnacle moments in the battles and the story.

Metal: The visual and audible styles between rap and metal will be distinct, so the viewer is able to easily distinguish who is saying what, where they are and why.

Locations: Gritty ‘downtown’ and urban areas with de-saturated colour palettes to help contrast the striking high contrast bar and rap battle scenes (with punches of saturated colour in the bar scenes to help reinforce focal points).

Conflict/Story: Major story arcs and conflict (rap battles) will take place in bars and busy streets.The bright lights contrasting with the slow fading of day into night helps transition the scenes closer and closer to the climax of the film. The movement and increase in foot traffic/people on the streets and inside the bars as the movie progresses should lend a claustrophobic quality to the shots. The scenes would move away from wide shots to closer and closer camera angles, closing in on the characters (mimicking the story line as everything begins to culminate in one final rap battle).panorama_de_san_diego

Positive Scenes: Positive scenes in the movie would take place in areas near water, usually during the day. However, the changing of day to night paired with an oncoming storm ever present in the back of shots will foreshadow the climax of the film (rain, thunder and lightening would most likely be present during the final rap battle).

The Rap group’s style would progress in a way that mimics the mood of the film and the dark topics. The lyrics and feeling of their verses would be depressive, almost mournful and backed with a repeating beat.
